A Marriage Made In The Garden
Can you imagine being in the Garden of Eden? Everything was fresh, plentiful and full of all things needed for life. Except for maybe one thing.
“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the cattle and to the birds of the sky and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him” Genesis 2:18-20
God expresses that it is not good for man to be alone. He is going to make a suitable helper for Adam. He has formed all the beasts of the fields, cattle, and birds of the sky. He brings them to Adam to be named. At the end of this process, we see that none of them were a suitable helper for Adam.
In Merriam-Webster Dictionary it states that suitable means; able, qualified; a suitable candidate for the job. I decided to go further and look at the synonyms to see what other words would describe suitable. Other words that define suitable are capable, equal, fit, and competent.
This says to me that animals we not able to be a help to Adam. They are not equal to human beings. They are a wonderful part of God’s creation but will never be on the same level as a human being.
“So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Genesis 2:21-23
I love reading about how uniquely woman was made. God put Adam in a deep sleep. He had no part of creating Eve. God took a part of man and fashioned that rib into a woman. God is such an artist. He created a suitable helper for the man.
When I read those synonyms again, I also see that woman was made equal to man. We have different roles, qualities, and jobs but we are equal. It is the same in the body of Christ. Some are called to be pastors and teachers, and others are encouragers or gifted in service but we are all equal. We may have different jobs and places in leadership but one is not worth more than another to God. We should all be worth the same… Share on X
“For this reason a man should leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and not ashamed.” Genesis 2:25
This was the first wedding ceremony. God as Father, brought the woman to the man and gave her to him. They were joined together as one flesh. I love that right here with Adam and Eve, in this perfect moment, before the fall happened, it was the purest moment of marriage ever! Adam and Eve had not eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Every thought in their mind and feeling in their hearts and bodies were pure. They were not tainted with evil and sin.
God created marriage to be pure. He created a husband to only have thoughts and feelings towards her. He created a wife to only have thoughts and feelings towards her husband. He created marriage between a husband and a wife. Equal parts of a whole. He created a wife to be a helper to her husband, to work alongside him in life.
I have been truly saddened to see the way the enemy has gotten into our thought lives and our hearts as human beings. I am discouraged by the way I see marriages torn apart. I have loved reading through these scriptures again. It gives me hope and reminds me of the sweet blessing of my husband. Despite it all, God has restored that beautiful gift of marriage in my life.
Lord, I thank you for the way you intentionally and purposefully created woman. I am thankful for the gift of marriage. I pray for those marriages that the enemy is seeking to destroy and for the minds and hearts he is trying to steal. Bring healing where it is needed. I pray you redeem and restore to us what you created in the garden. In Jesus Name! Amen!

Beautiful post Des….
I am so thankful that God has brought me Greg. We are so different yet perfect for one another. We definitely don’t have a perfect marriage but where one is weak, the other is strong. I love that about God…he knew what each of us needed and provided it!
